Numbers up for rote learning in maths - SMH

Numbers up for rote learning in maths

Interesting article from the Sydney Morning Herald a friend showed me. And, it's about maths.

"The thing that makes mathematics very, very difficult to learn is if you try to learn rules without any reasons," Professor Stacey said. ''What we need to be able to do is to focus on how we teach children the reasons why those rules work, not just what the rules are.''
...
''Once you know the reasons behind the rules you've then got a lot less to learn because as soon as things start to be connected you don't need to learn them all as separate things,'' she said.
